Your ring tone may be Janet Jackson’s “Nasty,” “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” or “Rhythm Nation.” But hers is a standard one that came with her phone.

It seems surprising for a pop megastar whose entire life has been steeped in music. The youngest sibling of the famed Jackson Five brothers, however, is something of an enigma. Her singing, dancing, and glam photos exude confidence, power, and control. Yet in her book, True You (Karen Hunter Publishing/Gallery Books, 2011), she reveals that she has suffered from insecurity about her body and that she began her musical career only reluctantly. Clearly, the Jackson persona belies the person inside.

Millions of people are seeing a new, intimate side of the soft-spoken but hard-driving singer on her Number Ones: Up Close and Personal tour. Typically, you’d find her performing in an arena seating 10 times or more the capacity of 1,127-seat McCallum Theatre. Yet the Palm Desert venue secured Jackson for its 2011 anniversary gala.

“It all started from a private show I did in New York at Radio City Music Hall,” she says. “I had never done anything like that. Being able to see each and every face, the energy I felt being close to people — I really enjoyed it.

For Jackson, fans and friends are often synonymous. “A lot of friends [in Europe] … would ask, ‘When are you going on tour?’ They hadn’t seen me in 12 years, so I knew I wanted to do something different than what I had done before, not knowing what that would be. Then I did that private show and realized this is the way I want to present the next project, which is the Number Ones package.

“It’s more than what I thought it would be. I truly think — I know — this is the most fun I have had on any tour. It’s really been fulfilling.” Some venues, she notes, have lacked air conditioning. “It feels like we’re in a sauna. But we’re still enjoying ourselves,” she says. “I get the opportunity to really be close to the fans. … I can see each and every face. … The energy is even greater; it’s much more intensive — in a good way.”

Jackson’s Dec. 1 McCallum appearance will be her first concert in the Coachella Valley, but not her first performance in the desert. She recalls being here when she made the music video for “You Want This” (from the 1993 album janet). In the song, Jackson’s girlfriends tell her that a boy is watching and wanting her.

The pop star has only been in Palm Springs once since then: “I was there a few years ago,” she says. “I drove down with a friend. We had lunch and drove back to L.A. … I was surprised how much [the desert] was developed.”

For more than three decades, I’ve struggled with yo-yo dieting. Some of my battles with weight have been very public. But most of them have been internal. Even at my thinnest, when my body was being praised, I wasn’t happy with what I saw in the mirror or how I felt about myself. (Excerpt fromTrue You, reprinted with permission)

“I think everybody has insecurities, and it’s something I continue to work on,” Jackson says. “The public has a certain perception. We all, especially artists, are incredibly insecure. People put us on a pedestal. They think everything we do is so glamorous. We are just like everybody else. There’s another side to the story.”

Jackson divulges her own insecurities in True You, just as her fans have confided to her private details of their lives. Skeptics would suggest a star of Jackson’s caliber wouldn’t care. But she does, and she thinks would-be strangers — these fans she considers friends — disclose things to her about their lives because they trust her music. “They see the truth and what I feel,” she says. “The songs, the albums, are my diaries; and I think the way I open up in the work is very vulnerable. … I think they feel it’s safe for them to open up to me.”

As a result of my success on Good Times, I was beginning to develop a small amount of self-esteem. I had accomplished something on my own, apart from my family. I had proven that I could act. The problem, though, is that the self-esteem was overwhelmed by self-doubt. I still did not see myself as attractive or especially talented. I figured I had gotten a lucky break. (Excerpt fromTrue You, reprinted with permission)

Though she had performed with her brothers at the MGM Grand and on The Jacksons TV show, Janet’s career in entertainment began in earnest with her role (at the age of 10) as Penny on the sitcom Good Times. Four years later, her father, without her knowledge, secured a contract for her with A&M Records. When MTV and VH-1 reigned as the go-to sources for pop culture, her combined talents in singing, dancing, and acting made her music videos mainstays on award shows.

Her future, she says in her book, includes more records, films, dancing, television, and books.

“I will definitely do more acting,” she says.” I’m going back in the studio and recording more music. I was going back this year; but, with the tour, we have been so busy and it’s been going so well I haven’t had the time to do that.”

The tour began last February and ends in February 2012. Meanwhile, Jackson has been reading scripts since signing a deal with Lion’s Gate to produce a film: a project she says has been a dream of hers. She’s considering a variety of genres — from romance to drama to science fiction. “It has to hook me from the gates,” she says. “I would love to do something interesting and thought-provoking. I love realism, real stories.”

As for another book, she hasn’t decided exactly what it will be, but it would be similar to True You(subtitled A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself) in one regard: “It’s just about helping people,” she says, “because I have been really blessed, and it’s just trying to give something back in the way I know I can.” Jackson recognizes that her career in music has opened the door to that opportunity. The book even includes health-conscious recipes from local chef Andre Carthen that helped her lose weight. “I have a few ideas [for the next book],” she says. “I would love to do something for children as well.”

Jackson’s keen interest in children led her to add a 20 Under 20 component to her Number Ones tour, recognizing up to 20 young people for contributions to their communities in each of the cities on her tour by giving them two tickets to her show and an opportunity to meet her backstage.

“It’s really been great going to different countries and cities, seeing kids from different walks of life, different backgrounds,” she says. “It’s just been really amazing to see what these kids have done. … They’ve started their own companies, started small financial community groups … some as young as 6 years old making jewelry and sending the money to orphanages in Honduras.”

Also at each of the stops on the tour, Jackson dedicates a song from the top 35 hits she’s performing at each show. For Palm Desert, she selected “Love Will Never Do (Without You).”

“For one very brief moment, I was going to dedicate ‘You Want This,’” because we shot the video there. But I thought, ‘I don’t know if they would really enjoy that.’” Her choice of “Love Will Never Do” is “for the boys that are out there,” she says. “I know from fan mail it’s one of the videos [gay men] really love.”

Jackson’s albums have, thematically and in their titles, followed where she’s been in her life mentally. While she says she won’t know what her next music will be until the tour ends, “It will probably be something that’s uplifting, celebratory.”

Meanwhile, she wakes up every morning mindful of her life philosophy. “The first thing I do is pray. It’s really about trying to be true to myself and living every day that I possibly can to its fullest, because you never know what tomorrow brings — and to live with no regret.”

Janet recently did an interview with MassLive.com where she talked about her new album, tour and her family. Check it out:

Singer, actress, author and member of one of America’s most famous musical families, Janet Jackson has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide.

Couple that with 35 No. 1 singles and a well-earned reputation for wild live shows and you’ve got the makings of a major event as Jackson hits the road for her “Number Ones – Up Close and Personal – 2011 World Tour.”

The tour, her first since the death of her brother Michael Jackson in 2009, finds the soul/R&B and pop songstress celebrating her 2009 hits compilation album “Number Ones.” Jackson will be dedicating one of her chart-topping singles to each one of the 35 cities on the tour, which will make a stop at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville Conn. on Wednesday and carries throughout the U.S., concluding with European dates in early July.

While touring in Asia at the beginning of the tour, Jackson took time out to reflect on her life, the tour, her family, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and much, much more.

You’ve recently released the book “True You” When did you first think about writing a book, and do you feel you accomplished your goals with its publication?

I have been thinking of writing a book for a few years now. I didn’t want to write an autobiography yet because I still have so much to accomplish in my life. I wanted to write a book that everyone, especially kids and teens, can relate to. I think that we were able to accomplish this. “True You” is about self esteem and how to get it, and I believe we accomplished that. I hope that everyone who reads it will know that they are perfect just the way they are. It has been a long road for me to get to this point, but I really enjoy my life now. I want that for everyone who reads “True You.”
Has writing the book been a cathartic experience for you?

Yes it has. As I said, it is not an autobiography, but it does have antidotes from my life. I talk about things that I thought I was over. But when writing about them, I learned that was not entirely the case. It has helped me deal with some unresolved issues.

The book reveals a sense of insecurity that you felt for much of your life. Some of it seems to have started on the set of “Good Times,” when they asked you to lose weight – at the age of 11. Looking back, do you think there were things that your family could have handled differently to improve your self-confidence during those difficult years? After all, you were just a kid.

I think that all people are different. I was the type of kid that held everything in. I am still very much like that. My family didn’t even know that I had these feelings. I do think that that time of my life affected the person that I have become. Kids are so impressionable. It is important that we all remember that we are role models, someone is looking up to us and our actions have an effect.

What do you say now when you meet kids who you know are struggling with insecurity?

I try to let them know that they are perfect just as they are. They should not listen to the media, or other people who try to tell us that we should look or act a specific way. Unless we are being morally incorrect, we need to stay true to ourselves.

Let’s talk music. The “Up Close and Personal World Tour” has had a lot of fan input, including having your fans help select the cities in which you are performing. I believe you’re also trying to make it more intimate than some of your previous tours. How do you achieve that when you are playing in some large venues?

I have been truly blessed by the response from my fans. This tour is a thank you to all the fans that have supported me over the years. I was performing a private date at Radio City Music Hall. It is a more intimate theater and all I could think about was how much fun I was having. Being able to look out into the audience and see every face in the house was amazing, and I thought, this is how I want to do my next tour.

I have been selecting venues that are more intimate, not the arenas that I have performed in the past. Almost all of the venues are more intimate. I have had to add additional dates to many locations because of the response but I am very excited about performing for the fans in this way. It’s not about pyrotechnics, it is a love affair between me and all the fans. I can’t wait to get to Uncasville and see everyone.

You have had some astounding sales figures through the years, including selling more than 100 million records worldwide and scoring more than 30 No. 1 hits. You’re one of the best-selling artists, female or male, of all-time. Did you ever have any sibling rivalry with Michael concerning your own success? Was he ever jealous of what you had accomplished?

No. All my family has enjoyed amazing opportunities and we have been blessed to enjoy some success. I am happy that I have written music that the fans can relate to.

Your shows have always had a lot of choreography, tons of lighting and a combination of playfulness and eroticism on stage. On past tours during “Would You Mind” you’ve brought male members of the audience on stage and teased them while whispering and touching them. I saw Beyonce’s last tour and she’s incorporated a very similar thing into her act. Was she stealing your idea and do you consider that a compliment? Or did you also get the idea from earlier performers?

I am flattered when artists are inspired by what I have done. Imitation is the best form of flattery. Performing is an art for me. Just like when I write my music, I am inspired by whatever is going on in my life at that time. I guess you would need to ask Beyonce if she was inspired by me… I can’t really answer that question for you. The idea for that section of my show came to me when I was creating the “janet” Tour. That is where it all began for me and it has become more playful with each tour.

When you’re performing all these highlights from your career on this new tour, have there been moments that caught you emotionally, songs that mean something extraordinarily special to you, especially when reflecting on them years later?

There are times while performing that (memories) will enter my mind of that period in my life. They’ve all been wonderful thoughts.

When you recorded “Got ‘Til It’s Gone,” it surprised some people to learn that you were a big fan of Joni Mitchell. Are there other artists whom you admire that some people might not expect?

I love Joni. She is so talented. Growing up we always listened to all types of music. In one room, you would hear classical music, in another, jazz. As kids we would sing while we were doing our chores. Writing music while doing cleaning the kitchen… (laughs). I was inspired by jazz, bossa nova, samba, and artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Sly & the Family Stone. With bossa nova, it’s the rhythms and melodies. The mood and tone put me in such a euphoric state. I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. With jazz, I found the moodiness very sexy. I love the beat of the drums.

When do you think you’ll be doing another studio album, and do you think the experience of writing the book will be reflected in your next music?

I plan to go into the studio later this year. I want to take my time with it. I don’t know what it will be yet, I have a few ideas but I want to be inspired by what is going on in my life. I hope that the fans will relate to it. It is possible that “True You” will have an influence in what I write… I have grown from writing the book, so I am sure some of that will come through in my music.

What’s it like performing in China? And does anyone in positions of authority ever give you a hard time about your stage attire; like that futuristic cat suit you’re wearing on stage on this tour?

(laughs) … I loved performing in all of Asia. The fans are so enthusiastic. I get so much energy from the audience. Nobody seems to mind what I am wearing. I am telling a story… from the songs I am singing to the choreography and videos to my costumes. We are just trying to put on a show that will let the fans escape from their troubles for a few hours and just have a good time.

You’ve said recently that you’re finally getting to the point where you can think about Michael and smile, thinking about the good times you had. What are some of those memories that make you smile the most?

Those memories are very personal to me and I would like to keep them to myself.

You’ve grown up in the spotlight for almost your entire life Have other people – from outside your family – who shared a similar experience – ever been able to help you put it all into perspective?

I have been very fortunate that God plays such an important role in my life. I start each day with a prayer. I think that relationship is the one that has been most influential in putting everything into perspective for me.

How much did watching the Motown performers such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder – and of course the Jackson 5 – play a factor in your musical development, and your approach to performing on stage today?

They are all such amazing performers. They take such great care of their audience and give so much. I guess that would be the biggest influence… Appreciate your fans and let them have an amazing time with you.

What’s your take on some of the newer female stars of the era – specifically, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry?

They are all so talented. I love what is happening in music today. I have been following Gaga for a long time. She is amazing… I am really enjoying Bruno Mars as well.

Tell me a bit about the “20 Under 20” program and what you are hoping it will accomplish?

We all see so much negative news today. It is everywhere. I want to acknowledge kids that are doing great things to change their communities. I am so inspired by these kids and I hope that everyone will see them, and what they are doing and be inspired to do something positive as well. That is why I am asking friends, neighbors, teachers and parents to go to my website, janetjackson.com and nominate the kids they know. I will give tickets to up to 20 kids and the first people to nominate them to my show and meet them back stage. I am having so much fun meeting them and learning what is inspiring them. They are amazing!

Lastly, with being an author, an actress, a performer, a recording star and so much more, you always seem incredibly busy. What’s your favorite way of kicking back and just relaxing?

I love to go anywhere where there is water. I love the beach… Just to relax in the sun and look at the ocean. That is what I love doing most when I am not working.

Hi everyone! I’m so bad with this stuff, I feel so bad because you’re all probably lacking Janet news! I’m being cluttered with school and work. Then, just recently, I dislocated my knee and pulled a few muscles (stupid weather!). So, it kept me from updating for awhile. Of course, if you were following my twitter, you would see that I just can’t shut up! I’m gonna return back to the site now because I’m on bedrest all week and I finally have the time to update the site and gallery. I’m sorry once again for being so flakey with the site. It’s hard being a student, employed and a site owner sometimes. I guess you can add injured to that too! I’m really sorry and thanks so much once again for sticking with me. I love you all.

Members of PETA gathered together yesterday at Janet’s opening performance for her tour in Manila. The members dressed up in “fancy” costumes of black with white masks, the group was little (only containing 9 members), but still had a lot to say and wanted to make a stand. This protest was against the ad campaign Janet did late last year for her Blackglama Legends campaign in which she wore fur in multiple shots. The picture can be seen here.

Janet did a really cute interview for TODAYonline talking about her opening show for her “Number Ones” tour next week and True You!

“NO MATTER what may be thrown your way, never give up and always follow your gut instinct … It won’t steer you wrong.” Words Janet Jackson lives by. And it’s a philosophy that has served her well through the years. It’s also a theme that runs through her book, True You: A Journey To Finding And Loving Yourself, a self-help book that’s filled with anecdotes and other life lessons that have helped the 45-year-old Ms Jackson get by.

“(True You) is not an autobiography. I do share personal anecdotes from my life because they help to explain what I was going through at the time,” she explained in an email interview with Today. “True You deals with my weight gain and loss … it’s about self-esteem. I wrote True You because I want to help people, especially the kids who are going through what I did when I was growing up.

“It took me a good minute to get here. It really did. But I love my life. I only wish I had this confidence when I was younger. I hope that when people read True You, they will know that they are not alone and that they can walk away after finishing it with more confidence.”

Fans going to her concert on Feb 7 can get a copy – a full week before it hits the bookshelves, by the way.

The lady has had one hell of a journey to get where she is. The youngest sibling of the ultra-famous Jackson brood actually started out as an actress, with recurring roles in the TV series Good Times and Fame, and playing Charlene Duprey on Diff’rent Strokes from 1981 to 1982.

But she couldn’t stay away from the musical groove for long. At 16, she released her self-titled debut, which was followed by the sophomore Dream Street (1984) – both of which received favourable but commercially mediocre response. It was with her third album, Control (1986), propelled by hit singles such as Nasty, What Have You Done For Me Lately and The Pleasure Principle, that the world finally noticed this young phenom. The follow-up, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, cemented the notion that she wasn’t just Michael’s baby sister any more.

And while Jackson has sometimes courted controversy with her sexuality – the album cover for janet., for example, featured her topless with a man’s hands cupping her breasts; and who can forget the “wardrobe malfunction” with Justin Timberlake? – she’s sold more than 100 million records worldwide and has been listed by the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) as the 11th best-selling female artiste in the United States. Last year, Billboard put her at No 5 on its list of Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists Of The Past 25 Years. It’s no mean feat and her fans know it, too.

But more importantly for fans in Singapore, she’s going to be performing next week at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. We managed to get her to spill the beans about returning to a place she’s not visited in almost two decades.

Janet, thanks for picking Singapore to be on your tour. It’s been a long time since we last saw you here.

Janet Jackson: It has been a long time. I was in Singapore for my JANET world tour. I remember how beautiful the city is and that everyone is so friendly. I had a great time and I am excited to get back to Singapore. I can’t believe it has been 18 years since I was there last. My fans helped me pick what cities I am going to be visiting on this tour so I have to thank them for letting me know they want me to come back.

I (have) created a more intimate show for Number Ones Up Close And Personal. We are not going to be using pyrotechnics this time and I am picking venues that will allow me to be closer to the fans. It’s just going to be me and my fans … Well, I’m bringing my dancers with me as well … I have to dance … LOL!

You’ve faced controversy over the years, yet you always seem to bounce back smiling. What’s your secret?

What controversy? LOL. I guess when you are creating music that is from your heart, you are not thinking about controversy … I just put it out there and hope my fans can relate to what I am going through and like what they hear.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in prepping for this tour?

Time! I have been so busy lately … I was in two movies last year, Why Did I Get Married Too and For Colored Girls, and I wrote my book. I am not good at multi-tasking, so trying to create a great show that my fans will enjoy will take much more time. It has been a great learning experience for me doing all of this at once, but it has been fun.

Another challenge was deciding what songs to put into the show and when. I have been working with my team, Gil our choreographer, Robert Behar our stylist … I am excited with how everything has turned out. I hope everyone has a great time at the show!

Is there a new album in the pipeline?

I have decided to go back into the studio this year … LOL! So much for not multi-tasking!

I’m not sure when or what it will be about yet. I am going to wait until I am in the studio and see what I am going through at the time. I want to create songs; I have always created songs that are inspired by what is going on in my life. I think it is more real … I hope my fans like what we create.

You’re an actor, singer, author … Is there anything that you haven’t done that you’d like to do?

There is so much more that I want to experience in my life and career. I couldn’t possibly list everything, but I would like to be in a Broadway show. I have a friend who was recently in one and he said that it is a whole different discipline and I would like to experience that.

How long would you like to continue doing what you do?

I love what I do. I can’t imagine retiring. I don’t know what it will involve but I know it will be a lot of fun whatever I do.

What’s the best thing about being Janet Jackson right now?

Going back to Singapore … LOL. I am very happy right now. Life is great.

And apart from answering our silly questions, what’s the worst thing about being Janet?

Why end there? I really liked your last question! We see so much negativity today. I am staying focused on all the great things that are happening. That is why I decided to acknowledge 20 young people under 20 years old that are doing great things in their community during my tour.

I hope everyone has gone to janetjackson.com to nominate the five young people they know. The winners and the people who have nominated them will be my guest on Feb 7 at my concert. I am looking forward to having them come backstage so I can meet them and learn about what they are doing!

Janet Jackson performs Feb 7 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Tickets at $88 to $248 from Sistic. Janet Jackson’s The Best compilation album is out now in stores.
